The entire Shahjalal Jamia Islamia School & College family proudly celebrates the remarkable achievement of its distinguished alumnus, Dr Imadur Rahman, SSC 1992 Batch, who has recently in December 2024 joined the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) under the Interim Government of Bangladesh.
Leaving behind his prestigious global position as Head of Research at Ericsson, Dr Rahman accepted the Government’s invitation to return to Bangladesh and contribute directly to national development. His journey from Jamia’s classrooms to becoming one of the world’s most accomplished technologists, innovators, and community leaders stands as a shining example of Jamia’s vision – to nurture individuals who succeed both in Dunya and Ākhirah.
A distinguished academic and technologist
Dr Imadur Rahman holds a BEng (Hons) in Telecommunications (2000), completed a Master’s in Radio Communications from the Helsinki University of Technology, Finland (2003) with a Nokia scholarship, and earned a Ph.D. in Wireless Communication from Aalborg University, Denmark (2007) with a Samsung scholarship.
He joined Ericsson Research in 2008, becoming a leading figure in global wireless innovation.
He has submitted over 600 patents, with more than 300 granted US patents, and his Google Scholar citation exceeds 2,000 references – an extraordinary legacy in research and innovation.
Leadership beyond technology
Beyond science and engineering, Dr Rahman is deeply rooted in community service and faith-based leadership.
He serves as President and Khatib of the Bangladesh Central Mosque in Stockholm, Sweden.
He is the Chairman of Muslim Aid Sweden Chapter, leading humanitarian and Ramadan welfare programmes for Bangladesh and abroad.
His peers regard him as both a scientist and a spiritual leader, balancing the intellectual and moral ideals of Islam in his life and work.
Returning home for a national mission
Dr Rahman’s return to Bangladesh marks a visionary step in building a new technological era under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus. Inspired by the mission of a “New Bangladesh”, he left a high-profile international career to serve his homeland.
At BSCL, he is already spearheading major digital initiatives, including the introduction of Starlink satellite services in Bangladesh, aimed at expanding nationwide internet access and bridging the digital divide.
An inspiration for all Jamians
Dr Imadur Rahman’s story is not only a matter of personal success but a source of pride for the entire Jamia community. From earning 13th position in the Comilla Board SSC Examination (1992) to leading national technological transformation, he truly embodies Jamia’s founding vision – producing individuals of excellence, humility, and service to society.
His father, the late Dr Habibur Rahman, was one of Jamia’s early visionaries and among the key founders of the institution. It is profoundly symbolic that his son now leads a national organisation shaping Bangladesh’s digital future – a legacy of knowledge and service continuing across generations.
As one former teacher beautifully reflected:
“Dr Imadur Rahman is a living example of Jamia’s mission – a scholar, scientist, Imam, technologist, and humanitarian united in one person. May Allah continue to bless him with barakah and success in serving humanity.”
May Allah grant him tawfīq, barakah and success in both Dunya and Ākhirah.
The entire Jamia family prays for his continued excellence, leadership, and lasting impact on the nation.
