The Jamia Alumni Network proudly celebrates one of the most memorable sporting achievements by a Jamian, the remarkable List A cricket debut of Jahid Ahmed, Jamia 2002 batch.

Ahead of his historic List A debut in 2006, Jahid Ahmed undertook specialised fast bowling training at the renowned Dennis Lillee Academy in Australia. His impressive performances and work ethic during the programme caught the attention of selectors and played a significant role in earning him a place on Essex County Cricket Club’s pre-season tour to South Africa. This opportunity became a major turning point in his professional cricket journey and paved the way for his breakthrough into county cricket later that year.

Representing Essex County Cricket Club, Jahid Ahmed made his List A debut against the touring Sri Lankan national team on 9 June 2006 at Chelmsford. On what became one of the proudest moments of his cricketing journey, he delivered a sensational match-winning bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for 32 runs against an international side filled with world class cricketers.

This outstanding debut performance immediately announced his arrival onto the professional cricket stage and remains one of the standout moments of his career. His bowling spell played a crucial role in Essex’s victory over the touring Sri Lankans and earned admiration within county cricket circles.

Most significantly, Jahid Ahmed is recognised as the first British Bangladeshi cricketer to debut in List A county cricket, an extraordinary milestone that inspired many young British Bangladeshis aspiring to enter professional cricket. His achievement represented not only personal success, but also a proud moment for the wider Bangladeshi community in the United Kingdom.
